• Today, thousands of people came together at Glastonbury Festival to create the largest ever human Extinction Symbol
• Huge crowds held a procession through the festival, joined by Nick Mulvey, Dizraeli, and the Wisdom Keepers
• Greenpeace UK and Extinction Rebellion share a major platform for the first time

Today, Extinction Rebellion and Greenpeace UK came together to form the largest ever human Extinction Symbol with thousands of festival goers.

Greenpeace representative Rosie Rogers called for ordinary people to join the Youth Strikers in September and “to join the rebellion”. On 20 September 2019, thousands of people across the world are expected to go on strike in order to force governments and businesses to take the climate emergency seriously. It was called by Greta Thunberg and is being supported by a huge number of different groups, including Extinction Rebellion and Greenpeace International. 

In Autumn, Extinction Rebellion will once against take to the streets. Dates TBA soon.

Jasmine Salter of Extinction Rebellion, said: “We are now building a movement of movements. People across the world are rising up and fighting for their right to exist. They know that we now have to unite if we are to face the climate and ecological emergency. Last year we were occupying the Greenpeace offices. Today we are standing together with thousands of people calling for the exact same thing.”

Prior to creating the huge symbol in King’s Meadow, in an event hosted by musician Dizraeli, Extinction Rebellion activist Dr Gail Bradbrook was joined on the Park Stage by Greenpeace activist Rosie Rogers and Ecuadorian shaman Kurikindi. The Wisdom Keepers said prayers for the Earth and called in the wisdom of their indigenous ancestors.

Then thousands of people took part in a procession through the festival site, led by people holding a “Rebel for Life” banner and Extinction Rebellion’s iconic pink “Tell the Truth” boat. They arrived at the end point, where they heard a set from musician Nick Mulvey and created the largest ever human Extinction Symbol. 

Lizzy Haughton of Extinction Rebellion said while sitting in the middle of the huge extinction symbol: “It is amazing to see the huge public support for Extinction Rebellion. I think people are finally beginning to realise that, in order to tackle the climate and ecological emergency, we are going to have to be radical. As Greenpeace, Oxfam and WaterAid have emboldened on thousands of tote bags at this year’s festival: “If not you, who? If not now, when?””

“We’re going to have to rebel. The time to come together is now. The time for open rebellion against our Government is now.”
