Local faith leaders from across Cardiff gathered to take part in an interfaith vigil to give their blessings to Extinction Rebellion members taking part in the Cardiff “Summer Uprising – Act Now” mass action from the 15-17th in July [1], which is aiming to raise awareness of the climate and ecological crises and demand that the Welsh and UK Governments take immediate action.

The interfaith vigil with the theme of: “Guardianship of the Earth: A spiritual and human response to the Environmental Emergency” took place in Alexandra Gardens in the centre of Cardiff and was attended by around 100 people. There were speakers from the Budhdist, Church of Wales, Hindu, Muslim, Pagan, Quaker, and Unitarian communities of Cardiff represented.

Stephen Lingwood, a minister in the Unitarian Church and member of Extinction Rebellion Cardiff who helped organise the vigil said, “Extinction Rebellion is for people of all faiths and none who want to create a world fit for generations to come. This interfaith vigil will be a chance to connect with our deepest values. It provided a space for different faiths and perspectives to offer their own perspectives and help every person to reflect on what motivates them to act to prevent the sixth mass extinction of species.”

He added, “Personally, my faith calls on me to love my neighbour. And that has to mean those people who are already dying in the world because of climate chaos, and the millions more who will do so in a few decades unless we act now.”

Cardiff will be transformed this week by the arrival of hundreds of concerned Extinction Rebellion members from across Wales who are determined to highlight the need for the Welsh Government to dramatically accelerate its actions in tackling the climate crisis and ecological emergency.

They will be occupying a central space in Cardiff – meeting from 9am Monday outside Cardiff National Museum. Dressed in yellow, protestors will represent dead canaries inspired by the words of Irish President Michael D Higgins, “If we were coal miners we’d be up to our knees in dead canaries”. The sixth mass extinction is here and it’s time to act now.

More about Extinction Rebellion:

Extinction Rebellion’s top-line demands:

  • Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.
  • The government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.
  • The government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.
