STATEMENT FROM EXTINCTION REBELLION: PHILIP HAMMOND’S LETTER TO THERESA MAY

We cannot go on talking about the price of transitioning to a carbon free economy in solely monetary terms. We need to talk about the true cost of inaction on the climate and ecological emergency: whether our children get to live into old age. Isn’t protecting them worth everything we’ve got? Isn’t life on Earth worth more than all the money in the banks? Remember back in 2011 the Eurozone bailout fund for the banks was 1 trillion euros. [1] Yes it will be expensive but the monetary cost pales in comparison to the price of firefighting the…

Extinction Rebellion UK’s relationship with Green and Black Cross – Response to GBC’s letter

This response was originally published in the XR newsletter on Wednesday 29th May 2019. Thank you, Green and Black Cross Thank you, Green and Black Cross, for everything you’ve done to support the right to protest in the UK and empower Extinction Rebellion to take mass civil disobedience on the climate and ecological emergency. Extinction Rebellion is immensely grateful for the support Green and Black Cross (GBC) have given to individuals and the whole movement in the UK. From being integral in establishing Extinction Rebellion’s Legal Support working group in Nov 2018, to fielding calls to support Legal Observers (LO’s)…

STATEMENT FROM EXTINCTION REBELLION

Extinction Rebellion is fully committed to nonviolence and will not take action that would put airline passengers at risk. Reports to the contrary are the result of a misconstrued interpretation of a document circulated within the movement asking for feedback. In the face of climate and ecological collapse we continue to build a peaceful movement with nonviolence at its heart. Further information on our planned actions over the summer will be available once we have concluded the consultation process with the movement. Notes to editors About Extinction Rebellion: Time has almost entirely run out to address…

STATEMENT FROM EXTINCTION REBELLION ON HEATHROW PAUSE

Extinction Rebellion demands the Government begins to act on its declaration of a Climate and Environment Emergency by cancelling all Heathrow expansion. On June 18, we plan to carry out nonviolent direct action to ensure Heathrow Authorities close the airport for the day, to create a “pause” in recognition of the genocidal impact of high carbon activities, such as flying, upon the natural world. If the Government does not cancel all Heathrow expansion, Extinction Rebellion will act to shut the airport down for up to 10 days from July 1. Extinction Rebellion is in the consultancy stage with its…

XR’s Position on Local/Regional Citizens’ Assemblies

It is heartening to see deliberative democracy taking root across the UK with places such as Oxford and Cambridge committing to citizens’ assemblies; a principle and practice we hope will flourish across the country—and world—as it is integral to changing the system that has brought us to the edge of extinction. A citizens’ assembly is one amongst many forms of deliberative methods that involve citizens in the governance of their country, cities, towns and villages. There are many forms of deliberative processes that all involve discussing and debating with peers, such as citizens’ panels, citizens’ summits,…

Newsletter 22 – Get ready for a Civil Summer!

A human artwork from XR France Welcome to our 22nd newsletter! This week saw some inspiring non-XR actions from the Youth Climate Strike and Greenpeace, and there are more to come, with exciting plans shaping up from Ende G and the Vienna climate camp. These actions are met by XR with support and solidarity. The change we want to see requires a whole movement of movements, and we are continually grateful to the many non-XR activists out there in the global north and global south, who are organising tirelessly and demanding urgent action from…

XR Business: Public Correction

For immediate release 27th May 2019 On 22nd April 2019, a letter appeared in The Times announcing XR Business. It was signed by twenty leaders and former leaders of businesses, as well as by two Extinction Rebellion (XR) people in the UK, Gail Bradbrook, co-founder, and Fiona Ellis. The project aimed to partner in some way with business in addressing the planetary challenges we all face. It also published a website (which has been since taken down). This happened in some haste in a particularly busy time, without full consideration by colleagues in XR UK and without the consent or…
