London Newsletter: Day 8

London rebels sat on a monument outside the Bank of England this morning, satirical broadsheets in hand. “Don’t panic, we’ve still got 23 trees left,” read one “don’t worry, it’s all good” read another. Yes, they were funny. But they bore grim resemblance to the message we are getting from this country’s political elite. The Queens’ speech, delivered today, which outlines the government’s priorities for the coming year, mentioned the environment only briefly, and said nothing of an emergency. So we must continue to rebel, with our tremendous XR energy! And today we did! Rebels flooded the financial district,…

Rebel Daily 6: Brutality in Belgium

(Sign up to the International Newsletter here) It’s been quite a weekend. We’ve seen no slowing down of global actions: Berlin, London, Australia, Turkey – as ever, more than we can name. But today’s showstoppers are undoubtedly the rebels in the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and most of all in Belgium. Well over 700 arrests took place in these three countries, 435 in Brussels alone, but these numbers on their own say nothing of the extraordinary courage shown by rebels in the face of some of the most appalling treatment our movement has yet faced. Rebels form Extinction…

Rebel Daily 5: Non-violently hitting our stride

(Sign up to the International Newsletter here) As we approached the first weekend of the October Rebellion, it was humbling and inspiring to see that rebels showed no sign of slowing down. In fact, day 5 was marked by a series of exciting milestones: XR Dublin had their first arrests; XR Israel reached a new level of direct action, as rebels glued themselves to the National Stock Exchange in Tel Aviv; and Aussie rebels pioneered the delightful new concept of ‘Civil Disco-bedience’. Hunger strikers in Rome met the Environment Minister yesterday.

London Newsletter: Rebellion Day 5

Midday at Trafalgar Square and Gail Bradbrook is on the main stage, with crowds gathered to listen in an enthralled silence: ‘This movement is like water!’ she declares. ‘You can’t get rid of us, because we will rest, regenerate and move again like water!’ And indeed we have. On day four we all flowed into Trafalgar Square, and on day five we were flowing back out in full, determined and joyful force! We first hit prime time television, when Rupert Read appeared on Question Time and kept a cool head in the face of some vehement criticism. The following…

Rebel Daily 4: Planes, boats and automobiles

(Sign up to receive the international newsletter here) Day four of the Rebellion saw rebels acting out of love and extraordinary courage. XR New York shut down Time Square with a lime-green boat, UK rebels descended on London City Airport and even climbed onto a plane, and Berlin switched up their tactics to keep disrupting the city. Rebels in Rio and Mexico City performed dynamic, creative expressions of a natural world under threat, and rebel organisers across Colombia are hitting their disruptive stride. With every day that passes, the rebel spirit seems to swell and surge, screaming its refusal to accept an ecocidal system any longer. We are…

London Newsletter: Rebellion Day 4

If you walked through Trafalgar Square this afternoon, you may have seen an innocuous looking sign plastered to a pole, quoting the words of Nelson Mandela “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” We must let these words resound in our hearts as we take stock and look forward to the days ahead. We have indeed had to clear out of all but one of the original sites, had 80 tonnes of equipment confiscated, and seen over 1000 rebels arrested (including an ex-police officer and many grandparents). Perhaps it seems our task is insurmountable. But we will not…

Rebel Daily 3: They gave their lives

(Sign up to receive the international newsletter here) Empathy begins at home. Many of those reading this will, in the past days and months, have fought, grafted and struggled to build spaces where human beings can come together, support one another in a shared sense of loving grief. Grief for the damage we see all around us; grief for the future we fear for our children or ourselves. For many, it’s only by means of this hard-won togetherness that our eyes can be opened to another harsh truth: that the emergency is not a future prospect, but is in fact a fact of life for…

XR Unchained 3

XR Unchained – Where today we bring you a photo montage bursting at the seams with inspiring rebelliousness! So, how does it make me feel, as a 16-year-old? Being told that in my lifetime tens of millions of human lives could be lost to this crisis, and countless vital species could be sacrificed to extinction because of the inaction of our leaders? It makes me feel terrified, and angry, and I can’t understand why our governments could possibly have allowed this to happen”.
