Newsletter 29 – Get Ready to Change the World

Pack your bags, secure your phone – it’s just days until our International Rebellion! We’ve got a big act to follow: last week saw the biggest climate mobilisation in history, with 7.6 million people in 185 countries marching and striking to call for a liveable climate. The Global Climate Strike began three days before the UN Climate Action Summit in New York. For all the talk of “increased ambition” and a “surge of engagement”, the UN Secretary General was still frank that “we have a long way to go”.  The summit saw 77 countries…

XR Unchained 3: The World Warms up for Rebellion

Boston Green Docks 27 SEP | Boston, USA Washington DC wasn’t the only American city where rebels were making their demands known last Friday. Hundreds of protesters blocked a bridge in Boston’s seaport section during the afternoon rush hour and held it for over three hours, demanding urgent action from a local and federal government still in denial about the growing climate crisis. The action, named ‘Flood the Seaport’ and organised by XR Massachusetts, referenced Boston’s extreme vulnerability to rising sea-levels. The coastal city is already plagued by regular nuisance flooding, with sea water spilling onto roads…

Announcements #2 The season of change begins!

Sign up to receive the newsletter here. This week, we reflect on the legacy we are leaving behind. ‘You have stolen my dreams and my childhood’ Greta declares at the UN climate summit in New York, ‘and yet I am one of the lucky ones.’ The audience cheer, but her face stays stony, bottom lip trembling – ‘how dare you!’ she cries.  Her words were echoed by the voices of millions of children who swarmed the world’s public spaces on Friday in the International Climate Strike. They received massive front page coverage and the support of UK…

Announcements #1: “What’s the point?”

Dear rebels, “What’s the point of me studying science, when all you do is ignore it?” “What’s the point of training to be an athlete, when I won’t have clean air to breathe?” “What’s the point of studying history, when all of humanity is heading towards becoming history?” See what school strikers in India have to say. Young people across the world are voicing the questions and rage we all sit with every day. Because, unless we act now there is no point. And we all know there is no time to dwell in…

Northern Rebellion: a rebel write-up

We’ve come to the end of our four-day Northern Rebellion. What an extraordinary experience. My first time at anything like this. These are  some of my personal recollections from those four days. Now, almost immediately we are into the preparation for International Rebellion London.  We occupied one of Manchester’s most polluted roads and shopping streets – Deansgate – for 4 days. We were there to stand up and be counted. We were there to highlight the need to address Manchester’s failure to meet legal air quality standards. And, we were there to prepare for London.  The Northern Rebellion  started in…

A Movement of Movements for the October Rebellion

Queries and Contact: alliance@rebellion.earth Memorandum of Understanding for interested groups Extinction Rebellion has introduced a Movement of Movements strategy as a crucial part of the International Rebellion in October and beyond. The initiative aims to include a wide range of groups from across society – doctors, farmers, animal justice activists, academics, faith communities, as well as international solidarity, peace, women’s, youth, elders, and…

Newsletter 28 – Murder in the Amazon

Rebels all over the world watch heartbroken as fires devastate the Amazon. Known to many as ‘the lungs of the Earth’, the rainforest is a vital organ of our living planet whose health hangs in the balance. The record-breaking fires are casting a shadow on over half the area of Brazil and are visible from space. On Monday, Sao Paolo was plunged into an unnatural ash-filled darkness in the middle of the day, and the ash cloud has now reached Peru. But the most traumatic effects are undoubtedly felt by those who call this forest home,…

History Corner – Peterloo

August 16th saw the 200th anniversary of the notorious Peterloo Massacre of 1819 in which mounted cavalry charged into a peaceful crowd of 60,000-80,000 people in Manchester, killing 11-15 and wounding up to 700. They had assembled to demand parliamentary reform and to protest against the poverty and inequality afflicting the general population, especially in the north of England. The Peterloo Campaign website has a brief summary of the events of that day and a poignant eyewitness account by Samuel Bamford, the radical reformer accused of treason and later imprisoned for 1 year on incitement…
