‘First they ignore you …’ – Statement on Policy Exchange accusations

We’ve been waiting a while for this one to come. And here today, summer silly season has arrived. On transparency A cursory scan of Google brings up much about the lack of transparency around everything to do with Policy Exchange, the ‘think tank’ who ‘asked’ Richard Walton to do his ‘deep’ research. Policy Exchange doesn’t reveal who sponsors their thinking. It is unclear what vested interests are behind this report, and we call on our media to robustly question this. We are concerned that those pushing for ‘business as usual’ to continue are sending the planet hurtling towards record levels…

An XR France account of Pont de Sully

English (translation) I want to tell you what was forged in me that day. (I realise that it will look grandiloquent and over the top, ten times too long to read, but it’s quite grandiose, I have no other way to say it!) Since I joined XR I have awaited, without really believing it that would come, that courageous moment when citizens would inform the police that they were about to undertake an act of civil disobedience and occupy a public place;  to show that no longer would we let things go on, that we were ready to face…

Newsletter 23: Radiohead joins the Rebellion

(Sign up for this newsletter here) Welcome to our 23rd newsletter! Yes, you read that subject right. Faced with a ransom from hackers, the legendary rock band instead opted for rebellion, releasing 18 hours of unheard material in an album online and donating the proceeds to Extinction Rebellion. (!) Needless to say we’re very grateful. No industry, sphere or genre is exempt from the threat of extinction. With this generous gesture, Radiohead have made clear that artists have as much a role to play as anyone. Radiohead releases ‘MINIDISKS [HACKED]’: ‘my…

Thank you, Green and Black Cross Thank you, Green and Black Cross, for everything you’ve done to support the right to protest in the UK and empower Extinction Rebellion to take mass civil disobedience on the climate and ecological emergency. Extinction Rebellion is immensely grateful for the support Green and Black Cross (GBC) have given to individuals and the whole movement in the UK. From being integral in establishing Extinction Rebellion’s Legal Support working group in Nov 2018, to fielding calls to support Legal Observers (LO’s)…

XR’s Position on Local/Regional Citizens’ Assemblies

It is heartening to see deliberative democracy taking root across the UK with places such as Oxford and Cambridge committing to citizens’ assemblies; a principle and practice we hope will flourish across the country—and world—as it is integral to changing the system that has brought us to the edge of extinction. A citizens’ assembly is one amongst many forms of deliberative methods that involve citizens in the governance of their country, cities, towns and villages. There are many forms of deliberative processes that all involve discussing and debating with peers, such as citizens’ panels, citizens’ summits,…

Newsletter 22 – Get ready for a Civil Summer!

A human artwork from XR France Welcome to our 22nd newsletter! These actions are met by XR with support and solidarity. The change we want to see requires a whole movement of movements, and we are continually grateful to the many non-XR activists out there in the global north and global south, who are organising tirelessly and demanding urgent action from…
