Nearly 75% of UK’s greenhouse gases originate in the oil and gas pumped from under the North Sea. The UK industry and Government plan is business as usual – produce a further 20 billion barrels between now and 2050. Drain the reservoirs.

If this plan is duplicated world wide – and why shouldn’t it – there is no chance of averting climate catastrophe and the likely/eventual end to life on the planet.

Oil workers have a crucial role to play if there is to be a fair and “just” transition to renewable energy in the UK, and the start to global resistance to fossil fuel production. They can’t however have a veto on future actions. It’s all our grandchildren’s futures that are threatened.

Those already experiencing climate chaos in the global south, world leaders and climate activists will be in Glasgow in November for COP26. They need to be looking towards Aberdeen and the North Sea and thinking about their own fossil fuel industries.
